gladiumetscutum: (surprised)

This is her own idea. She hasn't been given clearance, or any kind of authorization. This is breaking all kinds of rules, but it's not like they're the first she skirted outside the lines of, right? As per usual, her curiosity has managed to get the better of her. Cortana's heard some things about this "Project Freelancer" that the UNSC has allowed to run in an effort against the war. From what she could tell on the limited data she's been able to gather before now, it seems similar to the SPARTAN program in some ways, though augmentation of the soldiers doesn't seem to be part of it.

She wants to know more, though. So...she's maybe kind of...broken into their computer systems without any approval. But she'll be in and out before they can figure it out, and she has no plans on leaving any trace once she's finished.

At least, that's the plan in the beginning.

In her search through the files and data, she comes across something unexpected. An AI plugged into the system. She's sure it's an AI, despite how...broken it seems. It's not a smart AI, she can tell that much, but it's not like any "dumb" AI she's ever seen, either. This one feels...fractured, somehow. Like the coding's not all there or running smoothly...

Breaking off from her digging, setting it on a background process for now, Cortana extends her presence toward the other AI. She starts searching specifically for information on artificial intelligences used in the program and, while doing so, attempts to make contact.

"You're in distress," she muses as she observes this other AI further. It's strange. She's never...heard of an AI being in true pain before, and yet... She can almost feel the screams running through the system. "And you're not whole... What happened to you?"
